SLIPPERY ROCK UNIVERSITY SMITH STUDENT CENTER (Nov. 5, 2 p.m.)
College Dress Relief (CDR), a student-run organization within SRU's communication department, is selling bracelets to fundraise and sponsor a young girl in so that she can further her education.
The name "Yuda" comes from the Spanish "ayudar" meaning "to help," which is exactly what Yuda Bands does. Yuda Bands is a nonprofit organization that supports education in developing nations through the sale of Guatemalan bracelets, each individually hand-carved, hand-painted and made with re-purposed coconut shells and leather.
The bracelets are only seven dollars each, and all of the proceeds will go to Calmmer Magura, a young girl whose father is terminally ill and mother is unemployed and caring for him full-time. Magura hopes to further her education and someday become a nurse.
Sale of the bracelets will continue this Thursday, Nov. 7; next Tuesday, Nov. 12; and next Thursday, Nov. 14 at the Smith Student Center during common hour.
